Sonic Overload 2/21/11

When I originally typed this page, I had MSNBC on in the background and, as had been the case for the past week, they were talking about the protests in Wisconsin by public employees who have been gathering in the state capital of Madison for the past week. The reason for these protests are due to new Governor Scott Walker’s attempt to roll benefits for public employees and, primarily, to crush their unions by taking away collective bargaining rights. Governors in other states such as Ohio, Florida, New Jersey, Indiana and more hope to use Walker’s legislation as a blueprint to fuck with workers in their own states. I didn’t mention these issues on the show this week but that will change for next week's show. In the meantime, count me among those who support these public workers who are being bashed by conservative politicians and right-wing media. I’m sick of the bashing of teachers, in particular. What always amuses me is when I read comments by people who attack teachers and their postings are filled with spelling and grammatical errors.

I do touch on the attempts in this country to curtail reproductive rights for women, be it by the House’s defunding of Planned Parenthood or the legislation in South Dakota basically condoning the murder of abortion providers by essentially calling it justifiable homicide. And, regarding Planned Parenthood, they’re also an important resource for family planning and other health services. But the Republican thugs in Congress don’t care about women. They hate women—or their actions sure indicate such hatred. I start the second segment with the audio of an ad from MoveOn.org. You really should see the video and it's at MoveOn's site. Disturbing, yes—and it hopefully won’t become the reality.
