Sonic Overload 11/1/10

Billy Ruane was a genuine character. If the term “scene fixture” applied to anyone, it would certainly have been this gentleman. He was a tireless champion and supporter of the Boston/Cambridge music scene and was the person responsible for bringing rock music to the Middle East over 20 years ago. As my wife said, his arrival at a show meant it was now officially an “event.” He was usually attired in a suit jacket and untucked dress shirt, usually with some sort of alcoholic beverage in his hand and dancing around the floor like a madman. Fan, promoter and often impromptu MC. I saw him take the stage and appropriate the microphone more than a few times over the years.

Billy passed away last week at the age of 52 after a lifetime of battling various demons and afflictions. No reason to dwell on the reasons—let’s just remember a one of a kind character. As with Mr. Butch, it’s not going to be the same without Billy around anymore. There’s been an incredible outpouring of tributes and remembrances. Here’s one such piece: http://b.globe.com/9YlryX

And, of course, this week is the midterm election and it’s probably not going to be too great a day for liberals, progressives, et al. In fact, it’s not going to be a great day for America if the right-wing extremists end up in power. The Keith Olbermann piece at the start of Track 4 sets things out in blunt fashion. That comes from a 19 + minute “special comment” he did on his show about the tea party candidates, detailing their warped viewpoints. If you’re game, you can watch the entire thing here: http://huff.to/9rwJgy

One more thing—as I mentioned last week (and show at the top here), I’m trying to raise money to pay for equipment repairs, upgrades, etc. Any contribution, no matter how small, would be tremendously appreciated. You can PayPal donations to suburbanvoice@earthlink.net. Thanks to those who have already provided generous support...
