Sonic Overload 3/14/11

11 years of Sonic Overload... who'd believe it? Thanks to everyone for the support over the years. Since I played a lot of clips from older shows last year, I did something different for this anniversary show, picking favorite songs for the first year (technically) of each of the past four decades from 2001 to 1971 (and that set is more than a little self-indulgent). Enjoy...

Sonic Overload 3/7/11

No extra audio clips or political ranting this week, just the music. I’m feeling a bit under the weather and my voice sounds like crap. I didn’t even realize how bad until doing the editing. Next week is the 11th anniversary show for Sonic Overload. It won’t be the same sort of extravaganza I did for the 10th anniversary, but there will be a few surprises...

Sonic Overload 2/28/11

The theme of this week’s show is pretty self-explanatory, mainly a show of solidarity with the state workers in Wisconsin who are under attack by their newly-elected Republican governor, Scott Walker, who wants to strip them of their collective bargaining rights. They’re also under attack by various right-wing politicians, pundits and severely misguided, misled individuals who have been conned into thinking that everyone who belongs to a union is a “thug.” Crowds continue to grow at protests and rallies in Madison, as well as around the country and you get a taste of that at the beginning of Tracks 1 and 3. Thanks to everyone who suggested songs and bands with a pro-union and/or pro-worker message...

Sonic Overload 2/21/11

When I originally typed this page, I had MSNBC on in the background and, as had been the case for the past week, they were talking about the protests in Wisconsin by public employees who have been gathering in the state capital of Madison for the past week. The reason for these protests are due to new Governor Scott Walker’s attempt to roll benefits for public employees and, primarily, to crush their unions by taking away collective bargaining rights. Governors in other states such as Ohio, Florida, New Jersey, Indiana and more hope to use Walker’s legislation as a blueprint to fuck with workers in their own states. I didn’t mention these issues on the show this week but that will change for next week's show. In the meantime, count me among those who support these public workers who are being bashed by conservative politicians and right-wing media. I’m sick of the bashing of teachers, in particular. What always amuses me is when I read comments by people who attack teachers and their postings are filled with spelling and grammatical errors.

I do touch on the attempts in this country to curtail reproductive rights for women, be it by the House’s defunding of Planned Parenthood or the legislation in South Dakota basically condoning the murder of abortion providers by essentially calling it justifiable homicide. And, regarding Planned Parenthood, they’re also an important resource for family planning and other health services. But the Republican thugs in Congress don’t care about women. They hate women—or their actions sure indicate such hatred. I start the second segment with the audio of an ad from You really should see the video and it's at MoveOn's site. Disturbing, yes—and it hopefully won’t become the reality.
