Sonic Overload 12/17/12

I really don’t know what more can be said about the shootings at the elementary school in Newtown, CT that left over 20 people dead, most of them children. There are a variety of issues to consider, such as the availability of the weapons (which were licensed to the shooter’s mother and she was his first victim). It brings up the polarizing issue of gun control. There are questions of what causes this sort of unspeakable violence and, to what extent, mental illness factors into it. I talk about it a bit (perhaps clumsily) after the first song. I really don’t know what else to add here or could have added on the show.

Next week, it’s the holiday show and, the week after, the Best of 2012...

Sonic Overload 12/10/12

Sarah Kirsch (born Mike Kirsch) passed away last week from Fanconi anemia, a genetic disorder that can cause bone marrow failure or leukemia. She was only 42. Sarah had played in a number of bands for over the past two decades. Rather than rehash, here’s a link to an excellent tribute to her. R.I.P.

Yesterday (12/9) was the 25th anniversary of the death of Flipper’s Will Shatter, from a heroin overdose, at the age of 31. One always wonders if he could have been helped or if he even wanted to help himself. Some people take the attitude that heroin addicts or anyone afflicted with those sorts of demons get what they deserve, that they only have themselves to blame. But having a wife who has worked in human services for over 20 years means that I’ve learned, a bit at least, that things are a bit more complicated than that. I’ve heard countless stories about the difficulty her clients have had in overcoming the diseases of drug addiction, alcoholism, etc. And I think that people who have the “good riddance’ attitude need to look themselves in the mirror and wonder what caused them to be so callous and hard-hearted... Frankly, people with those attitudes are individuals I really don’t want in my life...

Sonic Overload 12/3/12

We’ve reached the final month of 2012 and, after this show, there are only two more regular Sonic Overloads before getting to the holiday show and Best of 2012—which I need to get to work on although I’ve already started to think about the playlist. In the meantime, this seems to be more of a loud/fast show than I’ve been doing of late, although I do throw in a few change-ups, breathers, what-have-you. Noisy music, to offer a twist on the title of this week’s show-opener...

Sonic Overload 11/26/12

It’s time for the annual all-covers show. As in the past, no songs from tribute albums were played and I also try to avoid all-covers albums by an individual artist although I did make an exception or two. There are a lot of new additions to the playlist this year and some that haven’t been heard on the all-covers show in a number of years, along with a few perennials.

What makes a good cover version? I’m not looking for a carbon-copy rendition. Sure, some of the versions here are somewhat faithful to the original but many of them add a different wrinkle or end being a reworking. Occasionally, you can end up with a cover that eclipses the original, although that’s somewhat rare. It’s a long show, this week, stretching out nearly an extra quarter of an hour.
Sorry about my voice not sounding the best this week. I’ve had one hell of a cold for the past week or so and it’s taken a bit of a toll. If you think I’ve got it bad, Ellen’s had it for a couple of weeks now. Pass the cough syrup!

Sonic Overload 11/19/12

Ah, yes, Thanksgiving week, where family and friends will get together to celebrate the conquest of the Native Americans by the so-called Pilgrims. Yep, a day of eating way too much food, followed by “Black Friday,” where people get in the holiday spirit by storming the doors of the shopping malls and box stores to battle over the half dozen pieces they have of those deeply discounted items. My kind of fun. I won’t be too negative, though. I really don’t mind getting together with the family because it’s not with the family members who annoy me. And there’s also three football games to occupy my time.

After all the festivities, make sure you check out next week’s show because it’s my annual all-covers Sonic Overload and it’ll be almost all songs that have never been featured on previous all-covers shows...

Sonic Overload 11/5/12

I’ve had it up to here with all the campaign ads, especially the Republican ones that are full of lies and distortions. I’ve had it with Republicans and conservatives period and a pox on the Supreme Court for the Citizens United case which created this deluge of ads from right wing SuperPACS. Also, have you noticed that most of the Romney ads airing lately feature white, suburban middle class women? ‘Ya think that might be because of the GOP’s radical anti-woman agenda regarding reproductive rights and health, as well as equal pay. Listen—I know the Democrats suck almost as much as the Republicans but the latter have a dangerous agenda and, in the most divisive political environment I’ve ever seen, they could really destroy people’s lives.

I hope people affected by Sandy are managing to pull their lives together again. As I mentioned on the show, Norton Records, a great NYC label, had their warehouse flooded and have been enlisting volunteers to help clean up the mess. If you’re interested in learning more about it and how you can help, go to

Sonic Overload 10/29/12--HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

It was a dark and stormy morning, afternoon and night. Despite the deluge of Hurricane Sandy, I hunkered down in the studio (aka the downstairs part of my house) to put together this year’s Halloween Sonic Overload. Some new selections this time, to go along with all the classics, favorites and the like. I hope everyone on the eastern seaboard manages to get through the hurricane with as little damage/disruption as possible although it does look pretty rough out there. Sonic Overload 10/22/12

I’m BAAAAACK!! Did you miss me? Our vacation in Seattle and Portland was a lot of fun. Well, the rain wasn’t a lot of fun and it rained about half the time we were out there but there was still plenty to do. I recommend checking out the EMP (Experience Music Project) in Seattle. It was nice to get together with people we don’t see all that often and I brought back a fair number of records, many of which can heard on this week’s show. I also pay tribute to the 30th anniversary of the Maximum Rocknroll compilation “Not So Quiet On The Western Front” by playing a whopping 10 songs in about 15 minutes.

I realize there’s a good amount of “lesser-known” bands this week and it covers a variety of musical styles (not that much straight hardcore) but I hope you’ll check them out and not just listen to the hits. Y’all might hear something you like.

Sonic Overload 10/8/12

Columbus Day—for the third year in a row, I start the show with a public service announcement, for which I downloaded the audio, urging people to reconsider the celebration of Columbus Day since, in essence, it’s a celebration of genocide. As with many events in history, they’ve been whitewashed and the truth obscured. I’m sure many of my beloved listeners already know about it, but you should definitely read Howard Zinn’s A People’s History of the United States for a much different take on what’s happened on this continent since 1492. And, if you’re a parent, there’s a version for younger people, as well.

I’ll be off for vacation next week and will return on 10/22. First time I’ve missed a week in four years. Why not go on the archive and check out some of the older shows while you’re waiting for the next one.

Sonic Overload 10/1/12

Two hours and thirteen minutes this week—more punk for your buck. Or no bucks—this is a non-profit operation. It’s pretty much a non-revenue operation but that’s OK because it’s still fun. I wanted to make sure I got in some of the newer records I might have been neglecting. And the show wraps up with one of the happiest songs you’ll ever hear. It’s a long one but I hope you’ll listen to every joyous second of that song and the rest of the show...

On a more somber note, this week’s show is dedicated to Mark Sheehan from Out Cold, who passed away two years ago today. I sure do miss him and I know I’m not alone with that thought...

Sonic Overload 9/24/12

I’m skipping the audio clips, once again. I actually had the infamous Mitt Romney speech at a fundraiser where he essentially denigrated half the people in this country, making the debunked claim that 47% of Americans don’t pay federal income tax and he also wasn’t really interested in trying to reach them. No shock, of course, and at least he’s being up front about it, although it obviously wasn’t meant for mass consumption. It was going to lead into the opening song this week, which still makes the playlist. Sing along!

Sonic Overload 9/17/12

This week’s show has no particular theme—no holiday content, no political audio, no real agenda. Actually, maybe that’s not true. The last song kind of sums up what I hope this week’s show (and all of ‘em, for that matter) is—fun fun fun! Damn, that’s kind of corny. But I’m finishing this show a bit later than usual, there’s the premiere of “Boardwalk Empire” and Monday Night Football to watch so I’m keeping this short. Enjoy!

Sonic Overload 9/3/12

Labor Day already and, as is the tradition, there are plenty of songs to mark the day. Of course, last week was the Republican convention. I didn’t include any audio because I wanted to make this an enjoyable show. But, man, what a revolting group of people, from the top down, and they believe in policies that are overtly hostile to working and middle class people. Members of teachers, firefighters, police and other unions who perform invaluable public services are made to look like thugs and ingrates. Things like Medicare, Social Security, safety regulations, even civil rights regulations are on the table with some of these characters. Not that the Democrats are all that much better but they at least pay lip service to people who aren’t super-wealthy or white.

Enough of that—I have a BBQ to attend to. Next week, the 11th anniversary of the September 11 attacks will be noted but it’s not going to dominate the show. I think I’ve expressed my feelings on the issues surrounding the attacks and the aftermath over the years but there’ll still be a remembrance.

Sonic Overload 8/27/12

Plenty to talk about this week, right from the outset—Republican Congressman Todd Akin, who’s running for Senator in Missouri, shows some tremendous ignorance about women’s reproductive systems, as well as regressive viewpoints on the matter of reproductive choice and the latter applies quite a few other Republicans, as well. Meanwhile, their white pride rally, uh, convention happens in Tampa this week and it appears as though they’ve dodged a bullet as tropical storm Isaac will be missing them. I guess God’s looking out for them, unlike those heathen in New Orleans. I recall that when Hurricane Katrina hit that city, Pat Robertson said it was God’s punishment for abortion. Unfortunately, as I type this, it looks like New Orleans is going to get nailed by this storm, as well. So, yeah, I talk about politics a little more this week, but you’ll be happy to know it still doesn’t dominate the show—but I might as well take advantage of my punk rock soapbox.

Sonic Overload 8/20/12

Three members of the Russian punk group Pussy Riot were found guilty last week of “of hooliganism motivated by religious hatred” and sentenced to two years in prison. The story has been getting a lot of coverage in the world press and sparked protests since their arrest earlier this year. I’d been checking on it sporadically but hadn’t mentioned it on the show until now (maybe I should have done it sooner but I digress...)

Pussy Riot are generally referred to as a band but someone told me it’s better to refer to them as an activist/performance art/protest group with a rotating membership. I’m not going to rehash things here but do include a brief clip from Democracy Now that gives a general overview. Some recordings have popped up on YouTube, including the one that starts this week’s show and I play another one at the top of the last segment. Even if there wasn’t any notoriety surrounding them, this is music I’d still be likely to play on the show. In other words, it stands on its own merits. In fact, it’s probably too abrasive for a more “mainstream” punk and rock audience—which is fine with me. And, of course, regardless of the style of music they play or whatever performances they engage in, it’s still a basic matter of free speech.

So let’s hope that they’ll be freed before the completion of the full two years (they’ve already served five months since their arrest) but I have my doubts that the Russian government will be moved. And let this situation also act as a cautionary tale to protect our own free speech rights and civil liberties in this country... rights that have been increasingly under attack in the name of the so-called “war on terror”...

Almost 2 ¼ hours of music this week... and I still had to put aside records to play next week!

Sonic Overload 8/13/12

Another long show with a bit over ten minutes of “overtime” but I had plenty I wanted to get it. The politics are eschewed this week. Instead, there’s a tribute to the 35th anniversary of Elvis “leaving the building,” so to speak. I also mark the 30th anniversary of the Process of Elimination tour hitting Boston, at the Gallery East, by playing all the bands who were on that incredible show. Not that I’m rubbing in the fact I got to see it. OK, maybe a little.

Sonic Overload 8/6/12

A little bit of chicken talk at the top of the third segment, concerning Chick-fil-A and the controversy concerning their homophobic founder Dan Cathy. Enough energy has been expended already so I keep it to a minimum. Incidentally, the “kiss-in” I mentioned was the one involving same sex couples that happened at the restaurants this past Friday (the “appreciation day” was last Wednesday). Bottom line—it’s unlikely communities can block them from opening but customers can “vote with their feet,” so to speak. I’ll stay away...

The hot/humid weather we’ve had the past several days has finally subsided a bit. I guess that means I can hopefully wear more clothing when I do the show next week although I did resist the temptation to record this week’s installment in my underwear. I really did do that a few years ago, by the way.  No pictures (sorry—or, more accurately, thank God!)

Sonic Overload 7/30/12

So let’s see, what’s going on in the world? The Olympics started with a rather over-the-top opening ceremony although I did kind of like the tribute to the National Health Service i.e. state-run health care. I can only imagine what the right wing assholes had to say about that. I watched parts of it and was happy to hear Mud’s “Tiger Feet” used in the musical medley but pissed that they cut away to break just as the Pistols’ “Pretty Vacant” was about to start and let’s not forget the incessant, inane yammering of the NBC announcers.
In the meantime, Mitt Romney continues to make a complete fool of himself and there’s an increasing call for a boycott of Chick-Fil-A, since their founder is a homophobic piece of shit who donates money to anti-gay organizations. The chicken chain is looking into opening a store in Boston and the city’s mayor, Tom Menino, is trying to stop it. That’s probably not legal but I still love the fact he did that.

Sonic Overload 7/23/12

No words I write here could ever convey the horror of the events in Aurora, CO a few nights ago. 12 people dead, over 50 people wounded in a shooting rampage at a movie theatre. And I also don’t know if what I did say after the first song, concerning the availability of firearms and the ongoing debate over “gun control,” was well-expressed. The thing is there are quick reactions from those who think any sort of firearms should be available, including assault weapons, and there are those who want more controls on or the outright abolition of gun ownership. My own feelings are mixed and perhaps somewhere in the mushy middle of the spectrum. In the meantime, it’s another episode of senseless violence and one wonders what can be done to prevent this from happening again. The sad truth is it probably will happen again. And I don’t think any one person or group has the solution.

But it’s not all doom and gloom for the next two hours—if you look at the playlist, I think you’ll see that’s the case. Time for some punk rock therapy...

Sonic Overload 7/16/12

We’re in the midst of a heat wave although today wasn’t quite as bad—I kept the door open and the fan running and that kept it relatively comfortable. I sometimes wonder if my neighbors ever catch a glimpse of what I’m doing or know what even goes on in here. You all know exactly what I’m doing--evil plotting, an ongoing subversion of people’s psyches through the devious tool of punk rock. Nah, I’m not that clever.

I revisit my teenage years a bit, once again, with a trio of 70s era songs, one of them a last-minute addition—Deep Purple’s “Fireball,” played in memory of their longtime keyboard player Jon Lord, who I found out had passed away just before I started recording the show. I’d also like to dedicate this week’s show, once again, in memory of Jeff “Jef Leppard” Davis, who played guitar in Voetsek and was also in STFU, who are played this week. He was killed in a motorcycle accident last month and his wife Nikki was badly injured.

Two hours and thirteen minutes, this week. Will I hit the 2 ¼ hour mark next week? You’ll just have to listen to find out...

Back to the regular programming this week and there’s also a respite from the brutal weather around here. I know that hasn’t been the case in many parts of the country so I hope you’re managing to keep cool. This show probably won’t help you do that, though... yuk yuk yuk. OK, I’ll stop with groan-worthy phrases. Another “overtime” show this week, clocking in at just over 2 hours and 11 minutes and I had to save some songs for next week, as well.

Sonic Overload 7/2/12

Yes, it’s that time of year again... Sonic Overload’s Salute To America! I actually recorded this on Saturday, June 30, because I have plans for Monday this week and I didn’t want to keep people waiting. There are some new songs this time around but there are still plenty of favorites, songs that absolutely have to be played for Independence Day. I think the show speaks for itself. Nah, I don’t hate the United States but I do get despondent about the way things are going, the kind of country we’re turning into. That’s what I hate. I think (and hope) you find it provocative because this is a punk rock show and that’s how it should be.

One minor correction—Josh Wolf from Bloody Hammer plays in No Talk, not No Thanks, as I mistakenly said on the show.

Sonic Overload 6/25/12

A jam packed, pretty high energy show that runs 2 hours and 11 minutes this week and there’s some commentary at the top, about the Supreme Court decision on Arizona’s anti-immigration law that passed in 2010. Some of the law’s provisions were struck down by a 5-3 margin, including the ones that allowed the authorities to arrest individuals without a warrant if they had suspicion of their legal status, as well as the one that made it illegal for undocumented immigrants to seek employment. On the other hand, police are still allowed to check the immigration status of people who are stopped or arrested. Of course, that still gives a lot of leeway for racial profiling and even legal immigrants are likely to be rousted if their skin isn’t white. So it’s far from a victory for those who are troubled by Arizona’s blatantly racist policies. But I’ll leave it at that. And I also pay tribute to Gay Pride weekend with some of this week’s musical selections.

Sonic Overload 6/18/12

I admit it, there’s an anti-cop theme at times on this week’s show. I’ve got my reasons, namely being stopped by a state trooper for having a burnt out brake light while driving into the city last week. I don’t want to go into a lot of detail but let’s just say it sure as hell felt like a fishing expedition and you’d think he’d have better things to do.

The other reason is to mark the death of Rodney King, the African-American man who was brutally beaten by the LAPD in 1992 and that sparked off some of the worst riots in the city’s history. It also influenced part of a certain song that concludes this week’s show. “Cop Killer” was actually performed before the King beating but Ice-T added some references to the incident on the recorded version. The song created quite a controversy to say the least. Charlton Heston quoted lyrics from it at a Time-Warner (the parent company for Ice’s label at the time) conference and the song was yanked from the Body Count album. Getting back to Rodney King, though, he drowned in his swimming pool and the death is still under investigation at I type this... I hope he’ll eventually be able to rest in peace.

Sonic Overload 6/11/12

It feels like summer is finally here. Famous last words, of course, since I had to turn on the heat for a brief time a few weeks ago when it got down in the 40s. No real theme this week and the show was almost delayed a game because I woke up feeling a bit under the weather and lost about 2 or 3 hours of time to prepare the show but still managed to start the recording around the usual time. I was also wondering if I’d be doing the show with two turntables since one of them suddenly stopped working last week. But I found a very good repair shop and the guy was able to fix it in one day and it was more-than-reasonable. I’m still working on adjusting things a bit with it but everything should be completely back up to par by next week. That’s the idea, anyway.

This week’s show goes out in memory of Jeff Davis, also known as Jef Leppard, guitar player for Voetsek. He was killed in a motorcycle accident over the weekend. The Voetsek guys/gals are top-notch people and I got to see Jeff play with them a few times. My condolences to his friends and family.
