Sonic Overload 10/17/11

Siege were one of the greatest local hardcore bands I ever saw—a terrifying, ravaging sound that attacked aurally and physically. The three musicians in Siege would pound their instruments to a bloody pulp but were tight as hell. At the center of this storm was their vocalist Kevin Mahoney, who was listed as Screaming Kev Mahoney on the hand-written lyric sheet given to me by their guitar player Kurt when he gave me a copy of their demo. The covers hadn’t been printed yet. It’s a prized possession and I lost count of how many times I copied that demo for people over the years until it finally saw release on CD and vinyl. They were the real deal. I don’t think they played more than 10 shows and I saw 3 or 4 of them (I’d have to check). They didn’t even have that large a local following while they were an active band although they did eventually build an audience here. As for Screaming Kev, the name fit. He’d howl and scream and flail himself around the stage and even play saxophone for their dirge “Grim Reaper.” Kevin passed away suddenly late last week at the too-young age of 46 and this week’s show goes out in his memory. Rest in peace.

Meanwhile, the “Occupy” protests continue to spread around the country. There’s the inevitable backlash from the usual right-wing elements but more people are making themselves heard. No audio from those events this week but I do have some very special audio at the top of the second set. You’ll just have to listen to find out.

Sonic Overload 10/10/11

Occupy Wall Street continues and rallies and protests have sprung up all around the country. There’s also the inevitable backlash, mainly from Republican politicians and pundits (big shock). One of the presidential candidates, Herman Cain, had the audacity to say "Don't blame Wall Street," Cain said. "Don't blame the big banks. If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself.” He also said that being gay is a choice and has a radical tax agenda that would include a 9% sales tax on everything, including food—of course, this will affect poor people a lot more than others. I don’t have the time or space to spell out his viewpoints but it’s made him a darling of Tea Bag Nation.

In the meantime, two former Bank of America executives received severance packages totaling about $11 million between them and that’s while the company is laying off 30,000 people and will start charging fees to use their debit cards. You couldn’t have a more perfect example of what’s wrong with this country.

And, oh yeah, it’s Columbus Day and that’s marked at the beginning of the show, with the “Reconsider Columbus Day” public service announcement that you can see on YouTube and a few songs about how indigenous people suffered after America was “discovered.”

Despite all this weighty subject matter, I don’t dwell upon it all that much. I think you’ll find this week’s show provides a couple of hours of loud ass-kickin’ fun that will take your mind off all the crap I mentioned...

Sonic Overload 10/3/11

So after a couple of weeks of protests on Wall Street, voices are being raised around the country as people get out and demand economic justice. That’s kind of a broad analysis of what’s going on but I think that’s what’s at the crux of this activism. And the mainstream media, which had largely the protests since they began, have started to pay attention. Part of it was due to some egregious police behavior, such as the unprovoked use of pepper spray on people in lower Manhattan by a rogue cop, Joseph Bologna, as well as the arrest of 700 non-violent protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge.

It boggles my mind that there are still people who support the banksters and the large corporations, who say that regulation is bad for the country. People who think that this is some sort of unamerican behavior. That’s the teabagger mentality and it’s a misguided notion. I don’t know all the answers—far from it—and maybe some people aren’t always sure what they’re protesting but when you’re unemployed, can’t afford life’s basic necessities and wonder what the future will bring, you can’t blame people for wanting to be heard, to make people understand what they’re dealing with. I start two of the sets with a few minutes of audio taken from a protest in Boston and a news report from Democracy Now...

Sonic Overload 9/26/11

There’s a good chance the state of Georgia executed an innocent man last week. His name was Troy Davis, he’d been convicted in the killing of an off-duty police officer but serious questions had been raised about his guilt. That still didn’t stop the state-sanctioned killing committed by Georgia, after the Supreme Court refused to stop the execution. The show starts with some audio from “Democracy Now” giving a brief outline about the case. One hopes the day will come when this country stops engaging in such barbarism and joins the rest of the industrialized world.

Sonic Overload 9/19/11

Back to our regular programming, more or less. I had to include the audio of Ron Paul at last week’s GOP teabagger, uh, tea party debate that was co-sponsored by CNN. The latter is lame enough. Way worse is the response Paul and a few shitheads in the audience gave to Wolf Blitzer’s hypothetical question about a 30 year old man who ends up in a coma without insurance. Also, I wish to hell I only had to pay $300 a month for my insurance. So it shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out the reason for the opening song. There’s no other way I can put it... fuck these people, the conservative politicians who are trying to outdo each other for sheer lunacy and their bloodthirsty, heartless minions. OK, I’m done...
