Sonic Overload 12/12/11

The last regular show of the year and it’s a hectic one. I played mostly vinyl, including a fair amount of new stuff and short songs means I’m working like a madman to get everything queued up correctly. That’s right—physical media although, as I’ve noted in the past, I do utilize some MP3s here and there and I used a few this week, including a very special track at the beginning of Track 2. I think I’ll just let you be surprised.

Next week—the holiday show where you won’t be hearing any of those crap-ass songs that are inescapable when I venture into the “outside” world. Hell, I don’t even like a lot of the holiday punk perennials. In the meantime, watch out for the crazy people on the roads and in the malls and shopping centers, although I hope you’re smart enough to steer clear of the latter two.

Sonic Overload 12/5/11

Back to the regular programming for this week and next and then it’s on to the holiday spectacular (?) and the best of 2011 to wrap up the year. I’ve been keeping away from the political coverage a bit lately, half paying attention to the Republican shenanigans, whether it’s on the campaign trail, in congress or in the media. But you can only take so much—so I’ve been watching movies. I finally saw “The Right Stuff” last week. Yeah, it’s probably a bit corny ‘n all but it actually has wit and some excellent performances. Beats watching Herman Cain, Mitt Romney, Michele Bachmann et al. I think it’s time to watch “Reservoir Dogs” some night this week. But don’t worry—if I do watch it, I promise not to play “Stuck In The Middle” by Stealers Wheel. Those of you who have seen the movie know the significance of that song!

Sonic Overload 11-28-11--the all-covers show!

Hope y’all didn’t eat too much for Thanksgiving. I can’t say that was the case here and I think I’ll be hitting the gym hard in the coming week. I actually snuck in a walk today, before recording the show. Anyway, this week is the annual all-covers show. Some favorites that I’ve played in the past but I’ve got quite a few songs that haven’t been on here before. It’s hard to believe there are only going to be two more “regular” shows this year, before the holiday show on the 19th and the “best of” show on the 26th. Where has this year gone?

Sonic Overload 11/21/11

It’s Thanksgiving week and, as customary, the day is marked with acknowledgment of what happened to the native population of this land when it was invaded both in 1620, with the pilgrims and, of course, in 1492. The clip that accompanies the Ill Repute song at the top of the show, featuring Mumia Abu-Jamal, states things more eloquently than I could—although I WILL be watching football on Thursday.

Next week, it’s the annual all-covers show—one of my favorite shows to put together and I have a number of new selections this year...

Sonic Overload 11/14/11

What is up with these Republican candidates saying they were told by God to run for President? Herman Cain is the latest to tell a Republican audience about his personal chat with the Lord, even comparing himself to Moses and I think it’s a line he’s used more than once. It’s silly enough when sports teams pray for God to give their team a victory—although I imagine that might be of interest to God if he/she had money on the game. One year until the election—and I’m sure I’ll have no shortage of audio clips to share with you as the campaigns continue to ramp up. I promise I won’t overdo it, though. Of course, politicians often make promises and we know how that usually works out!

Sonic Overload 10/24/11

Not a lot of political commentary today, except for a report on aggressive police actions towards Occupy Wall Street protesters. In Boston, things have remained relatively tranquil between the police and occupiers, although there were some arrests a few weeks back. Ellen and I went to Occupy Boston yesterday, down near South Station at Dewey Square—right across the street from the Federal Reserve Bank. I offer my thoughts after the Urban Waste song. My vocal chords felt shot at the beginning of the show but I didn’t have as many problems as the show progressed.

I forgot to mention, after playing the Inepsy song, that they’ve recently broken up. It’d been awhile since I’d seen them play live but they were always a lot of fun. And one correction—Sarin McHugh and the Everymen are from New Jersey, not NYC. Just keeping it all accurate!

Siege were one of the greatest local hardcore bands I ever saw—a terrifying, ravaging sound that attacked aurally and physically. The three musicians in Siege would pound their instruments to a bloody pulp but were tight as hell. At the center of this storm was their vocalist Kevin Mahoney, who was listed as Screaming Kev Mahoney on the hand-written lyric sheet given to me by their guitar player Kurt when he gave me a copy of their demo. The covers hadn’t been printed yet. It’s a prized possession and I lost count of how many times I copied that demo for people over the years until it finally saw release on CD and vinyl. They were the real deal. I don’t think they played more than 10 shows and I saw 3 or 4 of them (I’d have to check). They didn’t even have that large a local following while they were an active band although they did eventually build an audience here. As for Screaming Kev, the name fit. He’d howl and scream and flail himself around the stage and even play saxophone for their dirge “Grim Reaper.” Kevin passed away suddenly late last week at the too-young age of 46 and this week’s show goes out in his memory. Rest in peace.

Meanwhile, the “Occupy” protests continue to spread around the country. There’s the inevitable backlash from the usual right-wing elements but more people are making themselves heard. No audio from those events this week but I do have some very special audio at the top of the second set. You’ll just have to listen to find out.

Sonic Overload 10/10/11

Occupy Wall Street continues and rallies and protests have sprung up all around the country. There’s also the inevitable backlash, mainly from Republican politicians and pundits (big shock). One of the presidential candidates, Herman Cain, had the audacity to say "Don't blame Wall Street," Cain said. "Don't blame the big banks. If you don't have a job and you're not rich, blame yourself.” He also said that being gay is a choice and has a radical tax agenda that would include a 9% sales tax on everything, including food—of course, this will affect poor people a lot more than others. I don’t have the time or space to spell out his viewpoints but it’s made him a darling of Tea Bag Nation.

In the meantime, two former Bank of America executives received severance packages totaling about $11 million between them and that’s while the company is laying off 30,000 people and will start charging fees to use their debit cards. You couldn’t have a more perfect example of what’s wrong with this country.

And, oh yeah, it’s Columbus Day and that’s marked at the beginning of the show, with the “Reconsider Columbus Day” public service announcement that you can see on YouTube and a few songs about how indigenous people suffered after America was “discovered.”

Despite all this weighty subject matter, I don’t dwell upon it all that much. I think you’ll find this week’s show provides a couple of hours of loud ass-kickin’ fun that will take your mind off all the crap I mentioned...

Sonic Overload 10/3/11

So after a couple of weeks of protests on Wall Street, voices are being raised around the country as people get out and demand economic justice. That’s kind of a broad analysis of what’s going on but I think that’s what’s at the crux of this activism. And the mainstream media, which had largely the protests since they began, have started to pay attention. Part of it was due to some egregious police behavior, such as the unprovoked use of pepper spray on people in lower Manhattan by a rogue cop, Joseph Bologna, as well as the arrest of 700 non-violent protesters on the Brooklyn Bridge.

It boggles my mind that there are still people who support the banksters and the large corporations, who say that regulation is bad for the country. People who think that this is some sort of unamerican behavior. That’s the teabagger mentality and it’s a misguided notion. I don’t know all the answers—far from it—and maybe some people aren’t always sure what they’re protesting but when you’re unemployed, can’t afford life’s basic necessities and wonder what the future will bring, you can’t blame people for wanting to be heard, to make people understand what they’re dealing with. I start two of the sets with a few minutes of audio taken from a protest in Boston and a news report from Democracy Now...

There’s a good chance the state of Georgia executed an innocent man last week. His name was Troy Davis, he’d been convicted in the killing of an off-duty police officer but serious questions had been raised about his guilt. That still didn’t stop the state-sanctioned killing committed by Georgia, after the Supreme Court refused to stop the execution. The show starts with some audio from “Democracy Now” giving a brief outline about the case. One hopes the day will come when this country stops engaging in such barbarism and joins the rest of the industrialized world.

Back to our regular programming, more or less. I had to include the audio of Ron Paul at last week’s GOP teabagger, uh, tea party debate that was co-sponsored by CNN. The latter is lame enough. Way worse is the response Paul and a few shitheads in the audience gave to Wolf Blitzer’s hypothetical question about a 30 year old man who ends up in a coma without insurance. Also, I wish to hell I only had to pay $300 a month for my insurance. So it shouldn’t be too difficult to figure out the reason for the opening song. There’s no other way I can put it... fuck these people, the conservative politicians who are trying to outdo each other for sheer lunacy and their bloodthirsty, heartless minions. OK, I’m done...

Sonic Overload 9/12/11

A longer-than-usual show this week, recorded one day after the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks on the United States. I don’t think I need to go into any great detail in this space because the audio clips and many of the songs on the show tell the story and the show runs almost an extra quarter hour because I wanted to get everything on there. A tragedy in so many ways—the lives lost, the physical and emotional toll on the survivors, their families and the selfless, courageous first responders. The subsequent military actions overseas were also tragic, with the deaths of not only US troops but tens or perhaps hundreds of thousands of innocent civilians in Afghanistan and Iraq. And, of course, the fear and paranoia that grips this country, along with the attack on civil liberties. In some ways, you wonder if the terrorists actually won, given what’s happened in the US over the past decade.

This week’s show is dedicated to the memory of my friend Jane Simpkin, who was on the second plane that flew into the World Trade Center. Rest in peace...

Sonic Overload 9/5/11

Welcome to this year’s Labor Day show. Not too much in the way of new music this week although I did manage to at least get some recent releases on the show. I mainly stick to holiday at hand, though. Given the economy, the difficulty for many people to find employment and attacks on unions, it’s not the best time for working people but I hope it was an enjoyable day for everyone.

Next week’s show will have an air of solemnity, as it will be recorded one day after the 10th anniversary of the 9/11/01 attacks on the United States. I won’t spend the entire two hours dwelling on the events of that day—I do want to actually play more new stuff next week—but it’s still necessary to mark the occasion and remember those who died that day. It’s also important to ponder what’s gone on in this country and overseas for the past decade. In other words, don’t expect a whole lot of flag waving on this show.

But that’s for next week. Happy Labor Day!
