Sonic Overload 6/7/10

28 years to the day of this show being recorded, I began my not-so-illustrious career as a retail management trainee for the Zayre discount department store chain. That retail management trainee stint lasted less than five months before I quit. Listen—if you had to deal with hauling cases of anti-freeze, cleaning up the toy aisle after being invaded by demon spawn and was being told by your supervisor that 50 hours a week wasn’t enough of a commitment, what would you do? Anyway, the Discharge song reminds me of that summer, a saving grace. There was a lot of Discharge listened to on the way home from that job—and a ton of other punk and hardcore as well. It kept me sane.

I didn’t mention it on the show because it didn’t strike me until afterward but 30 years ago this month Malcolm Owen, vocalist for the Ruts, died at the age of 24 following an overdose. One wonders what direction the band would have taken had he lived. As it stands, they left behind a pretty impressive legacy and the song that closes the show today is a fine example...

Also, did you hear the news that Al and Tipper Gore are getting a divorce after 40 years of marriage. That grants me the opportunity to provide a tribute of sorts to the queen of the PMRC. I’ll be brief with the weekly outrage—the audio at the start of track 2 explains it pretty well. Kentucky Senatorial candidate Rand Paul apparently has a problem with the part of the 1964 Civil Rights Act that requires businesses to accommodate customers regardless of race, gender, et al. Paul, being a libertarian, finds fault with that. Whether or not he’s a racist or not, such a viewpoint would certainly embolden racists, the same thugs who beat and murdered people standing up for basic civil rights. Fox “pundit” John Stossel takes it a step further. Listen to the two clips I used from a Fox News broadcast. Unbelievable. Have we made that little progress? Sure seems that way, sometimes.

How the hell did I get three weeks behind of posting? Well, here's the first of three recent Sonic Overload shows that I'll post today.

Ronnie James Dio, vocalist for Black Sabbath, Heaven and Hell (the name that the Dio-fronted Sabbath have used in recent years), Rainbow and his own band, passed away over the weekend from stomach cancer at the age of 67. I never met him but was told by many people that there were few “rock stars” as friendly or classy as Mr. Dio (who was born Ronald Padavona in 1942). I had the opportunity to see the Dio lineup of Sabbath on the “Dehumanizer” tour in ’92 and then saw Heaven and Hell in 2007. It was a highly-entertaining arena rock show, too-long drum solo and all, and Dio’s voice was as strong as ever. Yes, he flashed the devil horns. Would you expect anything different? I’m still kicking myself (well, figuratively speaking) over missing the Black and Blue tour with Sabbath and Blue Oyster Cult in 1980. I blew it there. R.I.P. Ronnie...
