No, your ears don’t deceive you. In case you hadn’t heard the news, Republican (of course) Congressman Joe Barton actually apologized to BP for what he considered a “shakedown” by the Obama administration where they’re setting up a $20 billion fund to help pay compensation to those affected by the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. He then backed down—somewhat—but the idea that he’d even consider apologizing to those corporate vermin is beneath contempt. And the right-wing lapdogs were all saying he had a point, as well. So the first couple of songs, this week, are dedicated to those tools. And while we’re add it, I’ll dedicate the last song, “Vengeance,” to them, as well—the part about corporate criminals getting away with a slap on the wrist. $20 billion might be more than a slap but there are already reports it might not be enough... so a pox on all of them...

The opening song, the Raw Power and 7 Seconds tracks are dedicated to anyone who has been screwed over by employers. The songs at the start of track 4, in “honor” of Flag Day, are rather self-explanatory. Yeah, it’s a case of painting with a broad, reactionary brush but when I see stuff on certain social networking sites like “If the American flag offends you, I’ll be happy to help you pack,” it makes me want to play songs like that.

28 years to the day of this show being recorded, I began my not-so-illustrious career as a retail management trainee for the Zayre discount department store chain. That retail management trainee stint lasted less than five months before I quit. Listen—if you had to deal with hauling cases of anti-freeze, cleaning up the toy aisle after being invaded by demon spawn and was being told by your supervisor that 50 hours a week wasn’t enough of a commitment, what would you do? Anyway, the Discharge song reminds me of that summer, a saving grace. There was a lot of Discharge listened to on the way home from that job—and a ton of other punk and hardcore as well. It kept me sane.

I didn’t mention it on the show because it didn’t strike me until afterward but 30 years ago this month Malcolm Owen, vocalist for the Ruts, died at the age of 24 following an overdose. One wonders what direction the band would have taken had he lived. As it stands, they left behind a pretty impressive legacy and the song that closes the show today is a fine example...

Also, did you hear the news that Al and Tipper Gore are getting a divorce after 40 years of marriage. That grants me the opportunity to provide a tribute of sorts to the queen of the PMRC.
