Sonic Overload 6/28/10

Sonia Weitz, a Holocaust survivor who lived in my hometown of Peabody, passed away in late June at the age of 81. She founded the Holocaust Center North. Read this piece about an extraordinary woman: Sonia Weitz: Holocaust Survivor Kept History Alive.

I almost hesitate to mention it but I also just finished reading a book by Norman Finkelstein called The Holocaust Industry. It was a complete coincidence that I was reading the book the week that Sonia Weitz passed away. To say it’s controversial is an understatement. Both of Finkelstein’s parents were concentration camp survivors but he offers a pointed take on what he calls the Holocaust Industry. The premise of the book is that various Jewish groups have used the unspeakable atrocities of the holocaust to, among other things, justify Israel’s own transgressions and also extract restitution from different countries. There’s a lot more to it than that. What’s interesting is I had to have the book sent to the Peabody library from another branch. In fact, few of Finkelstein’s books can be found in libraries in this city or surrounding communities. Finkelstein has unsurprisingly become a pariah to a large segment of the Jewish community. I certainly don’t mean to dishonor Sonia Weitz’s memory but it’s quite a provocative book and worth reading.

This week’s show is also dedicated to the memory of original Kinks bassist Pete Quaife, who recently died at 66...
