Sonic Overload 7/18/16

Alan Vega from Suicide passed away over the weekend at 78… I’ll admit I was a bit late to the party for my appreciation of this band but, to use a cliché, they were groundbreaking. They often get labeled a punk band or proto-punk band but the fact is they pre-dated a lot of it, having started in the early 70s. And if their musical approach came from a different direction than what followed during the first crop of NYC punk bands, it was just as provocative. Perhaps more provocative. There was nothing cartoon-like or safe about Suicide. Also, for being viewed as forefathers of electronic music, if you listen closely, there’s a deep and abiding respect for pure rock ‘n  roll. Another one gone… this has been an awful year…
